Poyang People
Poyang Lake area has a long history. As early as Shang and Zhou
Dynasty (1600B.C.-- 256B.C.), the industrious people had exploited
it. Up to Western Han Dynasty (206B.C.-A.D.25), it was called "a
rich and popular place with abundant rice and rain" in the history
book. During the period of Dang and Song Dynasty (A.D.618-A.D.1279),
irrigation works were built in large scale in the lake area and the
irrigated farming areas were enlarged. Meanwhile the textile, paper
and shipbuilding industries and the transportation were developed.
During Song Dynasty (A.D.960-A.D.1279), there were more than 200 thousand
families living in the area. Up to Ming and Qing Dynasty (1368-1911),
economy in the lake area reached its climax, with more than 6,24mil.people
living in the area. The population in Wucheng Town was more than 70
thousand at that time, and kept growing. After the Opium War of 1840-1842,
for the reasons of the invasion of the imperialism, the intensifying
of the class contradiction, and the consecutive wars, economy in the
lake area weakened sharply, and the population dropped to 2mil.. The
population in Wucheng County was reduced from 70 thousand to several
thousand.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, under the
leadership of Chinese Communist Party and the people's government,
economy in the lake area developed quickly. Especially since the reform
and opening to the outside world, with the construction of the infrastructure
as irrigation works, transportation, energy, communication, etc.,
economy in the lake area has made achievements of world interest.
The comprehensive economic strength and agricultural productivity
developed unprecedentedly, and the population has risen to 8.32mil.
Yet meanwhile the growth of the economy has also made negative impact
to the ecological environment of the lake area. For example, inning
shrank the wetland area; the acute running off of the water and soil
at the upper reaches of Yangtze River intensified the filling up of
mud and sand in the lake, calamities as flood and drought became more
frequent and severe, water pollution escalated; over-development of
the grassland led the withering of precious birds and plants; over-fishing
degenerated the marine resources.
In order to improve the ecological environment of the lake area,
the government has taken many powerful measures to strengthen the
administration of Poyang Lake, and has carried out the policy of "reclaiming
the lake from the farmland, channeling the flood by backing out the
dyke, migrating the people to build the town", meanwhile constructing
the state-level natural conservation area of migratory birds.
People on the water
In Poyang Lake, ships of different sizes come to and fro,
busy working for each own interests. Some of the fishermen's ships
anchor nearby the wharf, some lie near the bank, some fish at the
bank, some cast the net in the lake, and some catch fishes by cormorant.
Large barge moves slowly with oil, coal, etc., which is clear contrast
with the yachts on the lake
